Given the relentless diversity of grey tones, it was no surprise to see it named PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray colour of the year, but like a ray of much needed warm sunshine following a difficult 12 months, it was great to see PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating also listed as a PANTONE colour of the year for 2021. The theme of combining grey tones with pastel colours such as pink, green, blue and yellow will be a key feature of this years designs, as we will see Resimercial design in all aspects of design.

What is Resimercial design?
Resimercial started as a popular term during 2020 amongst office and coworking designers, it refers to bringing in aspects of home décor into the contemporary workspace. Commercial spaces that are designed purposefully to make you feel more relaxed whilst working and meeting with clients, this in turn increases morale and therefore productivity.

It's a fairly simple idea, I mean who wouldn't want to leave home when you have your own barista, bean bag and cute co-worker that isn't actually part of your company? Am I right?

Why did this trend start?
This latest trend started long before the pandemic due to millennials who grew up with the web at there fingertips and the promise of Instagram's perfection, and for the smart businesses who employed forward thinking designers what better way to attract the best talent from the latest cohort entering the workforce, with an office that promises just that? Sounds like a place i would have dreamed to work at when i started in the working world.

How has covid changed things?
Whilst the trend was already in motion, Covid has certainly moved forward the future demand for coworking space, combined with moving it into our homes, home offices that resemble something you would see at Google HQ or your local Starbucks as people have taken a sense of purpose and pride in dedicating a space to the home office.

Why do I think we will return to coworking offices?
Because humans are social creatures and we need interaction, to bounce ideas, discuss and gossip about the simpler things in life and problems both work and personally, as well as some for of escape from our own personal households.

Zoom will play a part in this, it will be more as a practicality and to encourage further collaboration, removing the limitations of who we can talk to at a moments notice and give businesses limitless access to talent and clients at a moments notice. However, businesses run on people and essentially peoples needs become the same for businesses, interaction, ideas, problems and whilst zoom can play its part, it cant replace the social face to face interaction and the escapism of the home. There will still be a need to meet workers face to face and the likely result will be a transition of big businesses downsizing office space for periodic meetings once or twice a week via different departments, with small to medium size business filling up  the co working spaces for weekly meet spaces in the same manner.

So not only is Resimercial design here to stay in the commercial world but expect to see it finding its way into our homes as it has already started to do, whether you are a business or employee both will be benefiting from investing in their multi workspaces in 2021.
